Safety

At Messer, as employee-owners, our ownership mentality pervades all we do. And that includes safety. We want to own the outcome of our construction activities and we believe no job, task or schedule is more important than the health and safety of people on or near our jobsites. Our goal is to eliminate unplanned occurrences and accidents – we firmly believe we can build buildings without hurting people. Our commitment is to drive safety until we literally change our industry. We are doing this by implementing a new level of safety discussions and accountability as part of a comprehensive program called Safety 4Site™.

Messer’s safety efforts are every employee’s responsibility. These efforts are supported by our in-house Safety, Health and Environmental department, composed of team members who provide training and regular site safety reviews for every Messer project. This team’s expertise includes a registered nurse, an EMT, a veteran fire fighter/paramedic, and professionals with degrees in occupational safety and education. This team is led by an attorney who is a seventeen-year construction industry veteran, active in many local and national safety organizations.

Our safety culture focuses on keeping motivational messages and emotions at the forefront of everything we do, every day. Tapping into the emotional reasons to be safe has been a breakthrough. For example, our loved ones help motivate us to be safe through a campaign called “WorkSafe.” With WorkSafe, we feature Messer employees’ family members on posters placed throughout our jobsites. Bringing our families to the jobsites via these visual reminders positively impacts how we approach and value safety.

We further communicate our focus on safety with orientations for both employees and subcontractors. We remain consistent with our safety messages through continual training and education. We're so committed to safety education and training that we even partnered with outside consultants to help our business partners fully understand our new safety program. At an even higher level of focus, our Senior Managers outwardly and consistently communicate the magnitude of safety. It’s so important to our Senior Managers, that a substantial portion of their at-risk bonuses is directly tied to overall company safety performance.

Because of our success in making safety a core cultural value rather than an ever-shifting priority, we have been recognized as a safety leader among our industry peers.
