Opening of Proton Therapy Center approaching for Cincinnati Children’s and UC Health

February 2, 2016

Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and UC Health are on track to begin seeing patients at their new Proton Therapy Center as early as late summer – months ahead of schedule – thanks to construction efficiencies. Construction of the facility, which is located on CCHMC’s Liberty Campus, is being led by Messer and Linbeck Group.

According to Proton Therapy Center Executive Director Dr. Abram Gordon, the accelerated time table “reflects efficiencies gained in the installation process as a result of the construction team’s growing experience with technology.”

Proton Therapy is a precise form of radiation therapy used to treat cancer that does not damage surrounding tissue and has fewer side effects. The treatment is of particular benefit to pediatric patients, however the facility will treat both adults and children.

The Proton Therapy Center will feature three bays, or “gantries,” where treatment is administered – one for children, one for adults and one for research. It will be the only proton beam facility in the nation to have a gantry used exclusively for research.

There are currently only 17 operating proton therapy centers in the country, with 10 more under development, meaning the Liberty Township facility figures to serve as a destination for patients from around the world.
