Description

The Columbus Zoo & Aquarium is recognized as one of the nation’s top zoos. Plans for an Africa-themed exhibit were first announced in the 1990s. After decades of dreaming, the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium was able to bring their vision to reality with the Heart of Africa exhibit. The 43-acre exhibit includes 22 structures ranging from a cafe to housing facilities, an events pavilion and a man-made savanna. Exhibit houses giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, monkeys and lions among others in innovative housing facilities.

Features

  • Integrated many different materials and construction types such as concrete, steel, masonry and wood to achieve the project’s vision.
  • Despite scope additions, such as a 14,000 sf Events Pavilion, the Heart of Africa was ready for its highly anticipated opening due to the diligence of our project team.
  • Topography and strategic landscaping were used to hide fencing.
  • The Mapori Dining Facility is LEED Certification.
  • Awarded Best Project of the Year by ENR Midwest.
